To kickoff the release of my young adult/science fiction/ romance novel THE VANISHING SPARK OF DUSK, releasing with Entangled Teen (you can order it here,) I’m going to do an Inside the Book series where I will go through some key places & characters to help you get to know the story better.
I introduced Lark to you two weeks ago. (You can find out more about her here.) And she gave you a tour of her home last week (which you can find here.) This week I wanted to get a little more personal and do an actual character interview with the other key character. So fix your favorite hot drink, grab a blanket, and allow me to introduce Kalen Rydell.
Hello, Kalen, and thank you so much for offering to be a guest on my blog.
My pleasure, Ms…
You can call me Sara.
Sara. Almost sounds like my sister’s name, Sarka.
Indeed. Okay, so for those who don’t know, what do you look like?
Seven foot. Yes, I know that’s tall to you Humans, but it’s really pretty average to us Tavdorians. I have dark hair and a strong build. And, of course, purple eyes, like all Neket natives.
Naturally. So tell me, what did you want to be when you grew up—and what did you end up becoming?
Like most children, I wanted to follow in my parent’s business. My grandfather and mother worked so hard to bring The Rydell Trading Port up from a merchant’s table at the market to one of the largest trading ports in the empire. But since Mother passed away, and Father’s made all these changes she would never approve of… *looks away* *heaves out sigh* I don’t really want a part in the family business anymore, but I’m not sure what I see myself doing instead.
Hm. That is a tough place to be. On a lighter note, what are your hobbies?
*grins* I love to go sea boarding. I also enjoy a bit of hiking in the cliffs out by the Crecian Desert, brutal as that terrain is.
Interesting. Do you ever take love interests on these adventures?
Sea boarding is fun and so easy to learn, so it’s often one of the first dates. However, I’ve never taken anyone to my hiking spot in the cliffs. That place holds a tender spot my heart. My Mother used to always take me and my siblings there, so it’ll be a special girl who gets to see that part of my life.
A lucky girl, too, I imagine. So tell me, are you a dog or a cat person?
Dog. Definitely a dog person.
Do you drink alcohol?
Yes, but not enough to mess with my mind. I hate the feeling of losing control.
Same. What trait do you find most admirable in others?
Honesty, which is hard to find these days. Humility, but also pride in oneself and their accomplishments. It’s fine line to walk, I know. I have trouble walking it myself.
What scares you?
Disappointing my family. Losing those I love. I’ve already experienced both in the past year.
I can’t imagine losing someone I love dearly.
Well, thank you so much for sitting down with me.
The pleasure is mine. When you release this interview, though, be sure you do it in a way that no one knows you wrote any of these notes down. You know the saying: The best way to keep uprisings at bay is to keep all forms of literacy away. I don’t care that you can read, but for your own sake, you might want to keep it under cover. *winks*
Great. I’m glad my secret is safe with you. So long, Mr. Rydell.
Call me Kalen. And goodbye.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this interview with Kalen. 🙂 If you want to know more about him, or read an excerpt straight from the book, you can learn more here!
