One could think that now that the restaurants are allowed to open again, everything will be fine. The guests get their beer, their bread or a good meal, and the landlords their money. You would think. Mirjam wellein tells a different story.

The owner of the “topflas lack of planning certainty. “Important would be that the policy makes a clear statement how the year looks”, she says. The fact that it is allowed to reopen its premises does not mean that all problems are solved. On the contrary, for most restaurateurs the crisis will continue for a few more months. It is about the calculation of the whole year, about festivals and concerts, which will also be cancelled in the future. “The regulations make it difficult for all restaurateurs to survive the year.”

After the openings of the gastronomy: the atmosphere is not back again

For a week now, the “topfla” open again. First conclusion: compared to normal times, wellein is currently only turning over about one-third. She complies with all regulations, has taken tables out of the dining room, and talks patrons into wearing masks to be safe. “I feel like a police hostess,” says one father, says wellein.

The problem is the distance regulation, says the landlady clearly. Everything that the “topfla” the cartiers and the tables, the family and friendly atmosphere is not to be established at the moment. Hope knocks them through the pub area. “When the weather is right and the garden can be used again, then everything will be fine”, she says. That is, then it recoups the fixed costs – if the location is well frequented. With guests only in the inside area this is hardly to manage.

Help after the corona time: there is no lack of support

Wellein has no personnel costs at the moment. Friends and the kellerbergverein volunteer to help with service, so at least those costs are eliminated. But that is not a perspective. The expected wellein anyway from another place. “There is not a lack of support, there is a lack of policy that allows us to get out of it again.”

She does not mean the emergency aid that gave her 8300 euros or any loans that might be available in the future. Which she sees as a renewed debt trap. Because to postpone the costs does not help.

Wellein has a completely different demand on the politicians: “if the restrictions were removed, I would have no problems”, she says. Support comes from the guests, she is given a lot of courage. Wellein misses the red thread in the relaxations. Travel to other european countries is now partly permitted again, thuringia, unlike bavaria, has found more relaxed regulations. The problem, as she describes it, is not directly the decrease in parking spaces, but the relations that are no longer justified for wellein at the moment. “And I am supposed to save the world with my pub?”

The restaurateur hopes for the support of the guests who come to her. “We’ve done everything we can,” she says, she says, but doesn’t mean it in a resigned way: “there are many options, but i will do everything i can to keep the ‘topfla’ going.” she waits for the month to see how the situation develops, then she can make a decision about the future.

Hakan kanbur from the “old malt house” has a very similar opinion to report. He gives his restaurant a good two months if the situation does not improve. He was entitled to 15,000 euros in immediate aid, but so far only 5,000 have been transferred to him. He is currently running out of guests. “I did advertise, but it was not accepted.”

Corona crisis in gastronomy:: easter business has been missing

A hard cut was the missing easter business including communions. He also does not understand the decrease. The rules have changed, he says, “there is a complete lack of clarity about what the state wants.” with his current turnover, which amounts to about ten percent of the normal turnover, he can barely cover the personnel costs. He has to do something, but for that he needs financial resources. “If I don’t invest any money now, I can actually close down.”

Carmen D’aniello, on the other hand, is very positive about the future. After the “saporito when the company moved into the old barn, operations had to be rearranged anyway. The slow start with food collection from may and now the guest business was more to her liking. “It is well received in our country”, says D’aniello, who can also count on support from her family. With her, above all for the evening is reserved, since also it has fewer tables and not so easily any more spontaneously for instance a parchen to accommodate could. D’aniello says: “it would be better if we could receive more guests.”

If you walk slowly, you can discover a lot, even or especially where you think you know your own city. It is well known that in many places in Berlin stories and history go hand in hand, and yet the tour through the Scheunenviertel opened up some unexpectedly surprising insights and retrospections thanks to the two knowledgeable guides. Together with Kerstin Ewert and Niels Spellbrink, 40 employees embarked on an extremely entertaining and indeed diverse journey through time on Diversity Day. Hardly at the Hackescher market started, the first surprise did not let wait for itself. The area around the new synagogue, to the left, to the right and along Oranienburger Strabe, known here as the Scheunenviertel, is actually called Spandauer Vorstadt. The Scheunenviertel, on the other hand, was created in the 18th century. on Bulowplatz, today Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, where the Volksbuhne is located. Nix barn. Following this beginning, the walk was rich in in many ways unbelievable history*s.

Through THE Jewish Berlin?

A pithy title for a tour, but probably little more than a rough directional guide, because where or what is THE Jewish Berlin? For the first time it is recorded that in the 12th century. Jews (m/f/d should always be kept in mind) settled in the Klosterviertel, near the Rotes Rathaus (Red City Hall), respectively. were allowed to settle on the benevolence of the rulers. Since they were only allowed to earn their own bread through credit and trade, there was always expulsion and persecution, especially in times of crisis, but the Jewish people often quickly resettled. But when the plague raged in Europe in 1348/49, the first major persecution of Jews occurred in Berlin. History took its course, over centuries Jews settled in Berlin, were expelled, came again.

Jews have shaped the intellectual and cultural heritage of Berlin over the centuries (see map of the Jewish quarter berlin). Moses Mendelssohn, Fanny Mendelssohn, Rosa Luxemburg and Albert Einstein are just a few names. Not all of them lived in Berlin's Jewish quarter, but they were scattered throughout all of Berlin's neighborhoods. In the 1920s lived about 170.000 Jews in Berlin. Most of them fled after 1933 or were forced to emigrate. In 1939 there were still about 75.000 Jews lived in Berlin until 18.10.1941 the first "special train (as the jargon of the time put it), the Jewish train left the Grunewald freight station with 1251 Jews and the systematic deportation of the Jews from Berlin began. 55.000 Berlin Jews were victims of the Shoah, most of the others fled or were expelled. Only 9.000 of them survived underground or in a marriage with a non-Jewish spouse.

History must be preserved! Because we can learn from it for the future.

Hackescher Market. at the Spandauer Bridge.

The street signs are closely connected and at the same time also signposts through history.
In the 17th century. a gate stood here and opened the way through the medieval city wall to the fortifications of Berlin. Corresponding to its function in a fortification, the gate had a connecting wooden bridge.
End of the 19th century. the old Berlin moat was filled in and the first Berlin city railway line was built in place of the city wall. 11 kilometers and 11 stations made the journey from West to East a diverting pleasure, reserved primarily for the stockbrokers. Appropriately, the station at today's Hackescher Markt was called: "Bahnhof Alte Borse.

Rosenstrasse . Heidereutergasse

Close to each other lie here, so to speak, a sign of the beginning and a reminder of the end.

Heidereutergasse 4: The first synagogue was built here in 1712 and it was also the first publicly visible evidence of Jewish religious life in Berlin. In the pogrom night of 9./10. November 1938 it was not destroyed. One reason for this was probably the sheltered location in the middle of a courtyard surrounded by houses on all four sides. On 20. November 1942 the last service took place in the Old Synagogue, a little later it was completely destroyed. Today there is a green area on this place, where a memorial plaque and the outline of the synagogue marked with stones remind of this place of worship.
The monument "Women's Protest 1943 by Ingeborg Hunzinger commemorates the overwhelming women's uprising in the neighboring Rosenstrabe.

Rosenstrasse 2-4
Within six days in February 1943, about 8.000 people deported, including more than 2000 Jews, mostly male, who were in a "mixed marriage" lived. Spared until then, they were now separated and crammed into a collection camp at Rosenstrasse 2-4, a building owned by the Jewish Community. On 27. February, women and children gave voice to their concern for the men that could not be ignored. Hundreds of women protested day and night for a week until their husbands were released.

Grobe Hamburger Strabe – "Street of Tolerance and Death

The Jewish sites, the Catholic church, and the church of the Holy Cross lie side by side here. Hedwigs Hospital and the famous cemetery of the Protestant St. Sophia Church.
Miraculously, despite the ordered erasure of all Jewish inscriptions and symbols, the inscription "Boys' School of the Jewish Community" has been preserved above the portal of the house at Grobe Hamburger Strasse 27. A school with fences, cameras and guards that shows us an image that must make its viewers think. The Jewish High School Moses Mendelssohn – formerly a boys' school, later a secondary school – is today a state-approved private school of the Jewish community.

The past refuses any form of tolerance and pronounces death sentences.

In 1942 the Reich Security Main Office had the school evacuated. The building and the neighboring, first Jewish old people's home were converted into a prison with bars and floodlights as a Gestapo "Judenlager" in 1942. From here, more than 55,000 Jews were deported to the extermination camps of the East.
Directly opposite, the old Jewish cemetery, used from 1672 to 1827, speaks its own language.
Once it was a burial place for 50 families of Viennese Schutzjuden, who came to Berlin in 1671 and were settled in front of the Spandauer Tor. In 1943, SS men ravaged the cemetery and desecrated the excavated bones of the dead. In the last days of the war, 2427 war dead were buried in mass graves in the cemetery.
In the 1970s, East Berlin's Stadtgartenamt removed the remaining Jewish gravestones. In memory of the tragic events, a symbolic tomb for Moses Mendelssohn, a sarcophagus made of destroyed gravestones and the sculpture "Jewish Victims of Fascism" remain with which Will Lammert set a visible sign. The cemetery itself is a green oasis, almost idyllic and somehow deadly quiet.
Presumably 3000 war victims – of which about 2000 are known by name – rest here alongside an estimated 3000 Jewish deceased buried here.

Rosenthaler Strabe 39 – the Schwarzenberg house!

A house in which two special personalities still tell us today the story of their courageous and convinced resistance – it sounds almost paradoxical – impressively true to life. Otto Weidt and Anne Frank.

Museum "Otto Weidt Workshop for the Blind
In 1940, blinded himself, he opened a workshop for the blind in the backyard of this house as a broom and brush bindery. It was thanks to his own ear ailment that the staunch pacifist was able to avoid military service in WWII. Its operation, however, was considered "important for defense", since Otto Weidt sold his products mainly to the Wehrmacht. During the Holocaust, Weidt protected his mostly Jewish employees and saved the lives of several Jews through good relationships, bribery, passport forgery and with the support of Hedwig Porschutz. Among them was Inge Deutschkron, who later supported the founding of the museum and thus created an important place of remembrance. She herself was made an honorary citizen of Berlin in 2018 and died in March 2022 at the age of 99.

Anne Frank Center
Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1929 to Jewish parents and fled with her family to Amsterdam in 1933. After German troops invaded, the family hid in a back house from 1942 to 1944, where Anne Frank wrote her world-famous diary. The hiding place was betrayed and the Frank family deported. Anne died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945 at the age of 15. Through the publication of her diary, Anne Frank has become a symbol for millions of Jews who fell victim to the Nazis' racist extermination policy.

One house, two memorials, worthy of their own extended visit at any time.

View from the highest peak of Madeira, the Pico Ruivo.

Madeira – an island of flowers in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean

The Portuguese island of Madeira is a green oasis in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Here you can expect a stunning natural landscape with bizarre rock formations, tropical forests, rushing waterfalls as well as an extraordinary flora and fauna.

Madeira is not a typical beach vacation, because the coast of the volcanic island consists mainly of steeply sloping, rugged cliffs; there are only a few classic sandy beaches here. As the weather is pleasantly mild all year round, the island is a wonderful destination for hiking all year round. The network of hiking trails on 1300 km is very well developed and from the high vantage points you have a beautiful view over the entire island. But the most breathtaking view is offered by the Pico Ruivo in the interior, which with its 1862 meters is the highest mountain in Madeira and towers majestically over the island.

On the beautiful hiking trails you can admire the unique natural spectacle of the island. Because the nickname “flower island” is no coincidence: Madeira has numerous plant species such as hyacinths, agaves and flamingo flowers, which present a spectacular display of colors and scents.

Also worth seeing are the species-rich high moor Paul da Serra, the river landscape of the Ribeira da Janela valley, the Queimadas forest park and the historic irrigation canals, so-called Levadas. Also the visit of the charming fishing village of Camara de Lobos and the capital Funchal with the cathedral from the 16th century is a must. The city is well worth a visit for its nineteenth-century architecture, the idyllic harbor, the botanical garden and the great restaurants. Here you can enjoy the local port cuisine and the typical Madeiran liqueur wine, for which Madeira is known worldwide.

View of the beautiful old town of Bonifacio.

Corsica – the island of beauty

Steep cliffs dropping into the turquoise sea, gorgeous white sand beaches as far as the eye can see, vibrant port towns, charming mountain villages – this is Corsica, this is the island of beauty.

On Corsica, nature lovers, beach lovers and adventure seekers will find fulfillment in equal measure.
If you first want to learn something about the history of the French Mediterranean island, it is best to visit the capital Ajaccio. The historical harbor town is with barely
70 000 inhabitants the largest city on the island and the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. Follow in the footsteps of the former French emperor! One of the most impressive sights of the town is the old citadel, from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the historic harbor area.

Besides Ajaccio, Bastia is also considered an important economic center of the island. The tranquil town on the Cap Corse peninsula is known for its historic harbor, which is surrounded by a picturesque quarter with small alleys, cafes and restaurants.

Since the Mediterranean island is mostly a nature reserve, you can discover numerous interesting hiking routes or make daring climbs over one of the more than 120 peaks. Those who make it to the top of the highest mountain on the island (Monte Cinto is 2706 meters high) will be rewarded with an incomparable panoramic view of Corsica.

In Calvi and Porto Veccio beach lovers get their money’s worth. Miles of sandy beaches with romantic bays invite you to swim and relax. A boat trip from Bonifacio’s harbor to the Lavezzi Islands is a must for divers. Here there is a unique underwater world to discover – a true paradise for divers.

A popular excursion destination: the Smugglers’ Cove on the beach of Navagio.

Zakynthos – the pearl in the Ionian Sea

The southernmost of the Ionian Islands, which also include Corfu and Kefalonia, impresses with picturesque bays, spectacular cliffs and lush greenery.

If you are on vacation in Zakynthos, you can’t miss a visit to the smugglers’ cove on Navagio beach. Not only the shipwreck stranded there in 1980, but also the 200 meter high cliffs are a spectacular sight, as are the Blue Grottoes at Cape Skinari with their fascinating play of light.

Beside the beach of Navagio other beautiful beaches are waiting for all sun worshippers. In the south of the island, for example, is the beautiful bay of Laganas. Divers and snorkelers
can enjoy the colorful underwater world and discover the diverse underground flora and fauna.

The secret stars of the island are the hawksbill sea turtles, which lay their eggs in the sand along the southern coast. The 135 kmĀ² national park, where the animals live for part of the year, serves as a refuge for the strictly protected sea turtles.

Especially recommended is a trip to the capital, built in Venetian style
“Zakynthos Town”. In the most important commercial center of the island you will find numerous stores, taverns and sights such as the Byzantine Museum, the Citadel and the Agios Dionysios Church, which is considered the landmark of the city.

The original character of the island is only really understood when you visit the small mountain village of Loucha. Loucha was largely spared by the earthquake in 1953 and now appears with its historic architecture like an enchanted village where time has stood still.

Simply fabulous: the Old Man of Storr.

Isle of Skye – the island of mist

As the largest island of the Inner Hebrides, Skye combines a unique landscape with historic sights that captivate every visitor.
Skye, also called the “Isle of Fog” by its inhabitants, is connected to Scotland’s west coast by a motorway bridge. The Hebridean island does not bear its nickname for nothing, as clouds often hang on the mountains, causing abundant rain and fog, which does not detract from Skye’s beauty, however.

The varied landscape is unique: in the south, black and red mountains, the so-called Cuillins, rise sharply into the sky – the highest peak is almost 1000 meters high. In between valleys, rolling hills and lochs like Loch Coruisk.

In the north, on the other hand, you will find artfully polished mountains with soft and sometimes bizarre shapes: the MacLeods with their flattened peaks, the humpbacked Quiraing or the rock needle Old Man of Storr. You will also be enchanted by the magical valley of Fairy Glen, the crystal clear waters of Fairy Pools or the headland of Neist Point.

In addition to the impressive landscape, Skye is characterized by its remarkable sights. Portree, the main town of the island, is located at a sheltered bay in the northeast and is known for its colorful houses directly at the harbor.

Dunvegan Castle, the ancestral seat of the old island clan MacLeod, with its beautiful gardens is another highlight of the island. And of course, whisky lovers also get their money’s worth: Skye is home to the smoky Talisker whisky. During a guided tour of the distillery in the village of Carbost, you can taste Scotland’s national drink. SlAinte mhath!
