Traffic in and around bad kissingen has developed in recent years. The way the city deals with traffic on its streets, however, is hardly. A new and comprehensive concept is to help make up for the accumulated deficits and build a bridge for the inner-city traffic of the future.

The city council has now unanimously decided to commission a new traffic development concept. The task is a demanding one. The office that received the order is to develop an “overall strategy for the sensible, city-contractual organization of inner-city traffic” work out. It must take into account the needs of “all road users”.

City planner christine schwind described the initial situation as follows: as an important health resort with a new profile as a health and cultural location, bad kissingen needs a “coherent development and traffic concept”. To date, there has been no concept that adequately integrates all types of traffic. Demographic development must also be taken into account.

The administration and the city council have come to the conclusion that new thoughts about the traffic in the city are necessary, among other things, due to the reorientation that the spa business has already experienced and will continue to experience. The health care system has changed fundamentally in recent years, and the spa business is adapting to this change. The offers are therefore broader than before. The target group in the search for guests is young people. At the same time, the desire for peace and quiet and noise-protected zones is still very much in evidence. Guests of the city often also expect deceleration.

The city’s application for entry in the unesco world heritage list as one of the great spas of europe will have a major influence on the development of traffic in kissingen. If the application is successful, the city planner says it will not just be a question of where the planned world heritage center is to be located. The inclusion on the list is also expected to increase the tourist interest in the town. This resulted in “greatly increased visitor and bus traffic”.

Against this backdrop, it is necessary to consider how to develop the inner city unesco protected area for world heritage tourism. At the same time, the city has to protect sensitive and noise-sensitive areas of the spa business. The needs of the city’s residents and visitors beyond world heritage tourism also had to be taken into account.

The planned study will also provide results for key words such as accessibility, cycle paths and the hiking trail network. In principle, it is a matter of promoting the “soft means of transport, pedestrian and bicycle traffic” too strong, explained christine schwind. This means that developments in electric bicycles will be taken into account and the network of biking and hiking trails will be reviewed. Connection to the cycle path network of the district and to supra-regional cycle paths must be ensured.

Due to the “increase in mobilized individual transport”, according to the city planner, the park pressure is increasing. The concept should therefore include possibilities for “greater density of parking spaces” prufen. Other key words are: bad kissingen as a residential location and commercial development. Because kissingen sees itself as a high-quality residential location, it also wants to be attractive in terms of transport for young families, singles and senior citizens. However, as some of the through traffic in residential areas has increased considerably, “calming reductions” are necessary a topic. With regard to new commercial sites, the main issue is their sensible development.

Berlin square

Traffic surveys are necessary as a basis for such comprehensive planning. The city planner called the existing figures “absolutely no longer representative”. The last payment was made almost ten years ago. An important task for the creators of the concept is also the “review of the location of the central bus parking lot”. This has recently been the subject of heated debate, not least because of the competition for investors for berliner platz. This is also the background to a request made by the CSU and the SPD. The christian socialists had heard, said their faction spokesman steffen hortler, that it would take three years for the results of the comprehensive concept to be available. Against this background, he asked that answers to key questions, such as berliner platz, be provided more quickly. The city’s building department made this clear. The foundations had to be laid, and then priorities could be set.

Most citizens (51 percent) are in favor of a rough coalition, according to the survey published on friday by the election research group, and only 35 percent are in favor of black-yellow.

According to the survey, the governing coalition of CDU/CSU and FDP has 47 percent of the vote, while the opposition of SPD, greens and left-wing party together has 46 percent. The institute points out, however, that the 20. Up to 22. The representative survey conducted in august is not reliable, if only because of the statistical error margins. These are around plus/minus three percentage points for a 40 percent share of the vote and around two points for a ten percent share.

In the polls on who should lead the chancellorship, incumbent angela merkel (CDU) remains well ahead of her SPD challenger peer steinbruck: 63 percent want merkel, 29 percent steinbruck. Merkel also remains in first place on the list of the ten most popular politicians, followed by finance minister wolfgang schauble (CDU) and SPD parliamentary party leader frank-walter steinmeier.

Steinbruck ranks in seventh place.

The CDU/CSU is again at 41 percent in the survey, while the FDP has gained one point and is now at 6 percent. The SPD remains unchanged at 25 percent and the left at 8 percent. The greens also remain at 13 percent. All other parties fall below 3 percent each.

Only 18 percent expect the SPD to make significant gains before the general election. 78 percent do not believe it. Even among the SPD supporters, the pessimists are in the majority at 60 percent.

38 percent would like a red-green coalition. When it comes to social justice, however, most citizens do not trust a red-green government to make any decisive changes. Only 28 percent think things will be fairer in germany then.

In the federal election on 22. September around 61.8 million germans in germany are eligible to vote. With 31.8 million, women are clearly in the majority. A good third of the electorate is over 60 years old. The leading candidates of the parties will appear at dozens of events throughout germany in the coming weeks. In addition, the parties advertise with large posters and TV commercials.

Actually, the decline in the number of accidents last year is cause for celebration. 568 times it crashed, in the year 2017 there had been still 598 accidents. However, these figures should not obscure the fact that it is mainly minor accidents that occur less frequently. The number of injured even increased compared to the previous year. In addition, there were two fatalities on the roads in the altlandkreis district.

56 people injured in accidents last year. In 2017 there had been only 46 per sonen. There were twelve serious injuries (2017: 20) and 69 minor injuries (2017: 31). It is remarkable that the number of drivers with drugs behind the wheel increased from 16 to 24. This suggests that the officials are paying more attention in this area.

Fewer hit-and-runs

A total of 114 drivers were caught with cell phones. With 78 cases, the number of hit-and-run accidents fell by 13, but too many drivers still evade their responsibility – especially when people are injured in the accidents, as was the case five times in 2018. The police solved 32 hit-and-run accidents.

The number of motorcycle accidents fell slightly: in 2017 there were 20, last year only 18 accidents. The stretch between motten and kothen remains a focal point. This year, however, only five motorcyclists were seriously injured in the old district. In 2017 there were eight. 15 bikers got away with lighter injuries. In the previous year there were only eleven.

Surprisingly, there was not a single accident involving e-bikes in the altlandkreis in 2018. Two accidents involving local bicycles were registered by the police, however. This positive development is not continuing this year: in march, a boy on his electric mountain bike collided with a car in riedenberg. He injured himself only slightly. On the same weekend, a 71-year-old man was seriously injured near the book lawn when he swerved his e-bike to yield the right of way to another vehicle.

Familiarize with e-bikes

“We were lucky that there were no fatalities”, department head herbert markert looks back. Both e-bike riders were saved from worse by a helmet. He appeals to owners of e-bikes to familiarize themselves thoroughly with the new bikes’ handling characteristics beforehand. “I expect the accidents with e-bikes to increase and the consequences to be more severe as well”, says the police chief.

This wednesday, the strabburg plenum is expected to say yes after all when it votes in the second attempt on the reform step by eu climate commissioner connie hedegaard. The signs are favorable: some christian democrats have switched from opposing reform to supporting it after finding a compromise with social democrats and liberals.

The reform step is called backloading – an abstract word that is causing a stir. The idea is to postpone the issue of 900 million CO2 pollution rights for years – hence the word backloading. Due to the delayed issue and the shortage of market supply, the price of CO2 is expected to rise, making investments in climate-friendly technology worthwhile again, according to the EU commission’s calculations. Under the emissions trading scheme, europe’s industry must submit rights to emit the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) from its 12,000 factories.

Currently, the price is dumping around 4 euros per ton of CO2. The EU commission had once proposed 30 euros. Such a crisp price had practically forced companies to invest in climate-friendly technology. But this steering effect failed to materialize – in the crisis, europe’s industry cut back its production, the price of CO2 rights collapsed. And so energy companies like RWE continued to make good money with climate-damaging coal-fired power plants. Instead of making expensive investments, they would rather buy cheap pollution rights.

European parliament member matthias groote (SPD) wants to end this misery. Groote is seen as a man of the middle ground in the climate protection debate, and both environmentalists and industry representatives have warm words to say about him. The german is the parliament’s rapporteur and thus the central contact on backloading. But his report unexpectedly failed in plenary in april. Instead of starting negotiations with representatives of EU countries, as he had wanted, groote had to do some detention. In the environment committee, he sought a new compromise.

This compromise is now ready for a vote. Paper says EU parliament gives green light to backloading, but weakens it at the same time. The withheld CO2 rights are not to be released in 2019 and 2020, but probably already from 2016 onwards. So the shortage would be weaker than expected. In june, the environment committee voted in favor, paving the way for the second plenary vote. “Emissions trading is alive and well,” said groote with relief.

However, it is not yet certain whether the reform project will pass the strasbourg plenum “alive” or will be given the death knell after all. Veteran opponents of reform get ready for rhetorical attack. The second plenary vote is “idiotic,” the CDU/CSU leader in parliament, herbert reul, scolds in an interview with dpa insight EU. CO2 trading is a market instrument in which politics is not allowed to tamper arbitrarily.

The planned EU climate fund, which according to the parliamentary paper is to be fed by partial revenues from emissions trading, is unrealistic, he says. Finally, finance ministers were no longer able to freely dispose of the revenue from emissions trading. “No member state will go along with that,” says reul.

Reul’s finnish colleague eija-riitta korhola is shaking her head even more. Compromise is impossible on this issue, says reform opponent. “Backloading is like being pregnant – it’s either yes or no. Yes and no is not possible.”

The federal government was allowed to follow the backloading vote closely. After that, black and yellow probably had to show their colors when the council, as the organ of the member states, has to give its approval. Poland, a coal-producing country, steadfastly rejects the plan, france supports it. Germany is still without a position. While environment minister peter altmaier (CDU) is in favor in the interest of climate protection, economics minister philipp rosler (FDP) is against it out of concern for ballast for industry.

Defiant tones can be heard from the ministry, according to which backloading is to be “fought” against. Should mean: even if strasbourg gives the green light, the battle for backloading is not yet lost for opponents of reform.

Consumers in germany remain in a mood for consumption, even if the mood is dampening somewhat. In its monthly consumer climate index, the nurnberg-based market researcher gfk forecasts a decline of 0.1 points to 9.6 payers for january.

In the previous month, the value had risen by 0.1 payer. In addition to uncertainties caused by trade conflicts, the company cited the discussion about negative interest rates for private investors as a particular reason. “When money has to be paid for investments, this also affects the consumer’s purse strings. They are afraid that punitive interest rates will now be introduced across the board for private customers,” said gfk consumer expert rolf burkl in nurnberg.

The debate about negative interest rates has printed the propensity to save to a new all-time low of minus 74 points. Burkl said that the interest rate debate has also had an impact on income expectations. At 35.0 points, the last time this value was this low was over six years ago. Fear of interest penalties is making consumers insecure in their assessment of their own financial situation.

The prime rate in the euro zone has long been at a record low of zero percent. If commercial banks park money with the european central bank, they will have to pay a penalty interest rate of 0.5 percent. The consequences: interest rates on savings accounts and overnight money have virtually been abolished. In addition, more and more banks are charging negative interest rates on larger balances, sometimes even from the first euro for new customers.

Consumers are also more pessimistic about the economic outlook than in december, according to the gfk. European central bank’s low interest rate policy should stimulate corporate investment, expert says. “This is not happening to the extent hoped for because of the general uncertainty caused by the weakening global economy.”The trade conflicts between the USA and china and between the USA and the EU have made export-oriented companies in particular more cautious about investing. In the automotive industry and its suppliers, there is also the transition to electromobility and, as a result, fears for jobs.

On the other hand, consumers’ propensity to buy has continued to improve, burkl explained. According to the gfk, this value increased by 2.2 payers and, at currently 52.2 points, again reached the good level of the previous year. “In an increasingly stormy economic environment, the propensity to buy is proving to be a rock at the end of the year as well. This is good news for retailers.”

Looking ahead over the year, the consumer climate for 2019 is trending slightly negative, but consumers have not yet lost their enthusiasm for buying. The decisive factor for 2020 will be whether the employment situation remains stable. “Then consumption will also be a good pillar of the economy next year,” said burkl.

Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) is probably one of the vegetables with the most different names. In addition to cauliflower, it is known as grape cabbage, cheese cabbage, cauliflower, flowering cabbage, minaret cabbage or Italian cabbage. This versatility is also reflected in the range of varieties on offer.

Advance cauliflower
Cauliflower in close-up

Cauliflower is one of the more demanding cabbages, but growing it is still worthwhile. Provided you take a few tips to heart, you will be rewarded with a bountiful harvest and a versatile vegetable.

If you do it right, you can harvest cauliflower continuously from June to the first frost. For this you have to start very early with the preplanting of the cauliflower seedlings. For a first harvest in June, you should sow the cauliflower in January, at the latest in February. This can be done in a heated greenhouse or in an indoor greenhouse on a windowsill.

Colorful cauliflower varieties

The seeds are only covered with about two millimeters of soil and the soil should be kept moist throughout. As soon as the first leaves have formed, the plantlets are pricked out and continue to grow for a while at intervals of about five centimeters. It is best to plant the small cauliflower plants directly one by one in small pots or growing containers made of cellulose or other rotting material, then planting out later is easier. After about six weeks, the cauliflower plantlets are big enough to be planted outdoors.

The right location is important

Cauliflower requires a sunny to semi-shady location and a calcareous and nutrient-rich soil. In addition, the soil should be deep and loose. Larger stones or a superficial, shallow humus layer with compacted soil underneath does not suit cauliflower well.

Hard facts about cauliflower
Planting distance: 45 x 60 cm | Greenhouse sowing: from January | Greenhouse sowing: mid-March to April | Outdoor sowing: mid-April to mid-May | Harvest: June resp. July to mid-November | Soil: loose, lime-rich and humic | Cauliflower is a heavy grower | Good neighbors: bush beans, endives, peas, cucumbers, beet, celery, spinach | Bad neighbors: potatoes, cabbage, garlic, leek, rhubarb, chives, onions

Nutritional values of 100 grams of cauliflower:
25 calories | 1.9 g protein | 0.3 g fat | 5 g carbohydrates, of which 2 g fiber

Planting cauliflower outdoors

You should always grow plenty of plants in advance, so that when you plant them out you have a choice of which plants to use. Then only the strongest plantlets are planted out into the open ground. The bed should be sufficiently loosened beforehand and if necessary re-fertilized with compost. If there is a lack of lime, you can add a little more lime, the cauliflower likes it limey. You can find more about this topic on our pages about soil improvement.

Red cauliflower

In cooler areas and when in doubt about another frost, plant out under perforated film or fleece. The plants are planted out at intervals of about 50 centimeters. There are annual and biennial varieties. One-year-olds are used more often for obvious reasons: It's quicker and you don't have to worry about winterizing the plants.

Cauliflower is a heavy grower, so it should be re-fertilized several times, especially during the period of rapid growth. Stable manure or compost is well suited for this, but you can also help with artificial fertilizers. To increase the nitrogen content in the soil, the bed can also be mulched at planting time.

Cauliflower likes to stand in the sun, but it can be damaged during periods of very strong sunlight. It is advisable to shade the plants during this period. The easiest way to accomplish this is to break off a large leaf and place it on top of the cauliflower's head. In addition, sufficient watering must be done regularly unless there is enough precipitation. The soil should always be moist. Especially in summer, make sure that not only the surface is wet, but that the water also penetrates to the roots. Two weeks before harvest, stop fertilizing completely and water thoroughly several more times to ensure that the harvested cauliflower does not contain too much nitrite.

When is cauliflower ripe?

Romanesco

Cauliflower matures in about five months, which means you can harvest cauliflower as early as June if you sow early. Cauliflower can also be left in the bed longer and harvested later. You can harvest until the first frost. So if you plant enough, you will have fresh cauliflower for half a year.

Cauliflower varieties

The best known cauliflower in this country is the classic white variety, but there are many different varieties of cauliflower. For example, there is the Romanesco in green, yellow-green cauliflower, yellow-orange cauliflower, but also spectacular hits of color in purple or red. The coloration of these varieties is caused by anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are colorants commonly found in the plant world. They also appear, for example, in red wine, red cabbage or green asparagus. Anthocyanins act as antioxidants in the human body and are thus said to prevent certain diseases, such as cancer.

It is important to us that you enjoy your mattress and sleep system for a long time.

RELAX motorized frames come with a 2-year warranty on fittings and drive. RELAX bed systems and mattresses are guaranteed for 10 years against damage due to material and manufacturing defects, minus the customer's share. The customer share depends on the years of use: In the third year of use, the warranty coverage is reduced by 20% and in each of the following years by 10%, so that in the third year of use 20%, in the fourth 30%, in the fifth 40%, etc., are reduced. are to be calculated as customer share. Mattress covers are excluded from the warranty due to their different use.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Tips for proper care and handling

To help you enjoy your mattress for a long time, here are some tips on proper care and handling:

Changeover to the new sleeping pad

It is completely normal that the complete musculoskeletal system must first adjust to the new bed system and/or. must be moved. In the case of sensitive persons, there may even be physical counter-reactions at the beginning. This is completely normal and not a quality defect or reason for complaint. It is also often a sign that your sleeping surface may not have been optimally adjusted to your body. Under certain circumstances, the body can adjust to your new RELAX bed system within 2 – 3 days. However, the changeover can also take up to 4 weeks if you e.g. have previously slept for 10 – 15 years on a different or no longer suitable base.

Base

Damage to the cover or core of your RELAX mattress is often caused by the use of an unsuitable slatted frame or. unadjusted system.

Length / Width

Mattresses must be inserted into the bed frame or. fit the bed frame, therefore a plus-minus tolerance of 30 mm in length and width is permissible for your high-quality bed system / mattress (lt. oNORM EM 1334). The dimensions may change due to transport and storage. Shake the mattress up vigorously or pull it into its original shape if there are any dimensional discrepancies. Especially with latex mattresses, deviations can occur due to upright storage. This is completely normal and does not affect the quality in any way.

loss of hardness and slight hollowing

Mattresses must conform to the body in order to provide optimal body adaptation. Also a slight hollowing in the pelvic area is possible. The positive lying behavior is not affected by this. This is a completely normal, mechanical behavior by the first uses and no complaint reason. Please contact your dealer if the depth of the hollow exceeds 20 mm. (Please remember your proof of purchase)

Tip: Measuring the hollow – Place the mattress core on the floor and lay a long broomstick or a long spirit level across the mattress and measure the distance to the bottom of the hollow. So that the complaint can be processed quickly, a photo of this hollowing helps.

Airing, turning& Hygiene

Good airing of the mattress improves hygiene and prevents mold growth. The formation of damp mildew stains or even mold is most reliably prevented by good ventilation and a room temperature of 14° – 20°C. Use the right bed system. Mildew is not a reason for complaint but is due to incorrect care or handling of the mattress.

Do not jerk the turning handles, otherwise the fabric or the quilting seams can tear out. The turning handles are not transport aids but are only suitable for turning.

For washing or cleaning the cover, refer to the sewn-in care label. It is essential to follow the washing instructions so that the cover does not take damage due to incorrect treatment. Use only mild detergent.

Own smell

Mattresses are packed airtight with PE foil for hygienic reasons. After removal from the foil bag, the mattress may have an inherent odor, as you know it from many new products. Health impairments are not associated with it. The mattresses all correspond to the most modern human ecological knowledge.

Tip: Air your mattress sufficiently so that after a few days you will only notice a slight odor or none at all.

The RELAX natural latex mattresses and pillows as well as the Harmonie, Melodie and Sinfonie mattress covers are regularly tested by the Quality Association of Environmentally Compatible Latex Mattresses e.V. checked and certified according to stregen criteria.

The post Get to the point – legalese was yesterday’s news! appeared first on Sarabaysinger.

]]>

"You won't be able to write a normal love letter in two or three semesters," predicted Prof. Dr. Haberle in 1. Semester in the first constitutional law lecture. Everybody laughed, nobody guessed how right he would be. Neither do I.

Legal training shapes the way we think. But it also shapes the way lawyers communicate orally and in writing. Of course, legal jargon has its justification. Nouns, multiple relative clauses and passive constructions are not nice here either, but they are common practice. Lawyers should therefore refrain from using this "foreign language", especially in marketing communication – i.e. in communication with laypersons.

This also applies if you feel that the perception of your competence suffers when your website and client brochure sound more colloquial than your pleadings. Because this is a fallacy.

Platt is not equal to platt

That marketing texts are "too platitudinous" for lawyers and do not fully reflect the complexity of the subject matter is a concern shared by many colleagues. Here are two thoughts that should ease your worries:

"Platitudinously" worded from a lawyer's point of view is far from platitudinously worded from a reader's point of view – regardless of how educated the reader is. What seems abbreviated and colloquial to you as a lawyer is normal written language to any other reader. Even educated readers who understand several relative clauses in a row prefer to read simple sentences in everyday life, because it is simply not as stressful. In addition: When it comes to texts for the Internet, the attention span of the reader is very short. Texts and individual sentences should therefore be short and easy to understand, because otherwise the reader cannot grasp them well, especially on a small smartphone display..

The technical complexity of your work does not have to be explained in full to a potential client. He just needs to know if you are the right lawyer to solve his legal problem. Therefore, you can generally do without legal details and technical terms in marketing communication if you are not addressing a well-informed group of readers (e.g., a general public). B. corporate lawyers). But even then, technical jargon should be used sparingly.

Of course it is correct to write, for example, that one has extensive knowledge of substantive law and procedural experience. But who knows what substantive law is except us lawyers? Writing that you use your extensive knowledge of XY law and your many years of experience says the same thing, but everyone understands it.

Leave text deserts

Complicating matters further, lawyers not infrequently have a penchant for completeness. Everything that could have relevance must be brought into the field. That's purposeful in a legal context, but not in marketing. That's why the lawyer's claim to completeness must not become a quality factor for a marketing text.

Marketing is the art of reducing to the essential. Important information must be reduced to key statements that hit the mark. Details are usually of interest only later and can then e.g. clarified in personal contact. Detailed text deserts nobody reads – except Google. And if a text desert impresses Google, but alienates readers, nothing is gained. So do without.

No fear of losing competence

Marketing texts for lawyers must also be comprehensible and to the point: precise statements, without legal verbiage, as long as necessary, as short as possible.

Why? Understandable texts on your law firm website etc. thus certainly do not provide for loss of face or even competence in the perception of the readers, even if that fears many colleagues with layman-fair texts straight in on-line marketing. Quite the opposite: If people understand you, it creates trust.

How to get storage vegetables through the winter in a simple way.

Looking serenely at the beets, which seemed to be making themselves comfortable on a bed of straw, he said, "That's where they are now. Certainly they tell each other all winter long stories."Matthias Fersterer, Oya editor at Klein-Jasedow, helped last year to create the windrow in which the beet harvest from our field was to be stored over the winter. His comment made me realize how much vitality is in these roots. If I replanted them the following year, they would bloom and give us seed.

Our rent looked like an oversized molehill at the end of the day. A small pyramid was created from several layers of beet, bark mulch and straw, which we first covered with a layer of soil, then with a thin layer of straw and finally another layer of soil. So even the worst frost had no chance to creep into the roots. Whenever I picked up a load of dark red tubers in winter, I felt like an animal from the forest. Nothing man-made got in the way: a pile of crops, straw, bark, earth – nothing else.
A few years ago, we sank plastic tubs into the ground to store our root vegetables out of concern for voles. Such constructions are called "field cellars". Once, the parsnip harvest was so plentiful that there was no tub left for a wheelbarrow full of carrots. Short-handed we piled the roots on a heap and packed soil and straw on top – with the result that they came through the winter even better in the above-ground rent. The vole feeding was fortunately kept within limits. Cats and weasels help against these garden inhabitants anyway better than all other attempts to keep them away.
The simplest solution is often the best. The archaic technique of embedding is a science in itself. Particular care is needed when removing the fruit: it is worth starting at the bottom and making sure that the fruit higher up slides in after it. If there is a small cavity in the front of the turf because the outer layer of soil is frozen and not everything wants to slide together nicely, it must be stuffed with dry hay. The opening itself is also sealed again with straw and soil after each removal.

The farmer and his manual
Runkles for our sheep also come in a rent. Neighbor Olaf Schroder helped us shovel sand over it last fall and said, "We still put in a pipe for ventilation." This increased my interest in the science of building windrows.
We can certainly learn a lot here from our local neighbors. For example by Christian Kickhefel. The part-time farmer lives in the old town of Lassan, which was melancholically sung about by Wolf Biermann in GDR times; our village is now a Lassan district. Traditionally it was a town of carpenters, turners and farm workers. Only from the two curved main streets do the low, somewhat Scandinavian-looking houses look like what you would expect in a small town. The backyards lead to gardens and potato fields. Until the 1950s, the people of Lassan were self-sufficient. Even today, especially the older people grow their own potatoes. Christian farms a larger field, about two and a half acres. Annually, he harvests 300 hundredweight of potatoes, a tenth of which he rents for his family and as animal feed. I stop by to ask how he piles up his potato windrows.
"Everything is written here," he says, proudly handing me a yellowed little brochure. "I don't need to tell you anything." It is the "Handbook for Farmers and Settlers" from 1947, published shortly after the land reform, which in the first years of the GDR divided up farmland previously worked by landlords among the population. Many new settlers, who had nothing to do with agriculture before, thus got a five to eight hectare site and needed information.
Christian has opened the book on page 97 and points there to a drawn longitudinal section through a "soil windrow for wintering permanent vegetables", that is for all types of cabbage, celery, carrots, beets, radishes and kohlrabi. One thing that strikes me is how pointed the elongated pile overarched with soil and straw is at the top. "So that the rain can drain off well," Christian Kickhefel points out. – "Do you do it the same way as in this book?", I would like to know. " Yes. For potatoes, we first dig a bed of about 20 centimeters into the soil. There is a rule for the cardinal direction, which is also here in the book: 'The direction of the rent goes from east to west'." The cold east wind and the wet west wind have less surface to attack on the narrow sides of the hill. Learned something again!
"Potato piles must not be particularly large, otherwise they become too warm," Christian explains further. "Here it is: one and a half meters wide and 80 centimeters high." In the drawing in the book, a pipe lies directly on top of the pile of vegetables – not vertically like a chimney into which it might rain, but parallel to the ground. A drainage pipe five centimeters in diameter is suitable to form the air channel, I read, but so are four slats nailed together. "That's for venting," the farmer knows. "But you don't necessarily have to do it. We just packed a sheet of straw on top of the windrow and left that open, so no soil shoveled over it yet until frost – works the same way. Just before it gets really cold, straw bales come around the rent, and then earth over it again."Aha – just I understand something: A rent is not built immediately after the harvest ready. If the autumn still has warm days, the time for the straw layer has not yet come, but only a first layer of earth – Christian's book says: 10 centimeters thick – provides darkness, cooling and moderate moisture. At the top, a narrow strip remains uncovered or. only stuffed with some loose straw for ventilation. Only shortly before the frost is the actual insulation layer applied. "There used to be elongatedbales of rye straw, about 20 centimeters thick," the farmer recalls. "They were perfect for insulating the rents. You build them staggered – like bricklaying – so there are no cracks. Mice don't go into rye straw, it's much better than wheat straw."
There's nothing like the advice of a long-established neighbor! But even creative newcomers sometimes have good tips: When we visited Wibke Seifarth and Stefan Raabe from Landkombinat Gatschow near Demmin at the beginning of May, we were given carrots by the case. Stefan got them from washing machine drums he had buried in the ground; a few bales of straw were placed over them. Such a construction may seem more comfortable than a pile vaulted with soil, but we'll still be making the archaic turnip mounds again this fall. The technique is so simple and so effective! Whenever my gaze falls on the piles, I wonder what stories the roots are telling each other through the winter. –

Where to go if you are interested in castles and viticulture? To Mecklenburg. Yes, don't smirk knowing better. To Mecklenburg. Picturesquely framed by seven hills, near Neubrandenburg lies the small town of Burg Stargard. Up to 2000 bottles of Mecklenburg country wine are bottled here every year.

Stargard Castle is the northernmost hilltop castle in Germany

On the castle hill, 50 meters above the city, the medieval Stargard Castle stands as a witness to a significant past. It is the only preserved hilltop castle in northern Germany! Built more than 750 years ago, it is also the northernmost hilltop castle in Germany and the oldest secular building in what is now Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It was once built as the court castle of the Margraves of Brandenburg.

It is the nucleus of the town of Burg Stargard, which in earlier centuries had a much greater significance than it does today. Tourist magnet so is the castle. Several times a year there are events that revive the Middle Ages, such as the Castle Festival or the Medieval Days. The complex, as it presents itself today, consists of a total of eleven buildings from different eras.

Oldest German grape variety is cultivated in the town of the seven hills

Here is also one of the northernmost vineyards in Germany – a tradition of more than 500 years was revived a few years ago. In total there are about 1200 vines of the varieties Ortega, red Regent, Muller-Thurgau, Phoenix, Solaris and Elbling on an area of about 0.2 hectares. The latter belongs to the oldest German vines. According to the private winegrowers' association of Burg Stargard, 1000 to 2000 bottles of Mecklenburg country wine (white and red) are sold annually.

Well, who would have thought it: Mecklenburg is wine country! The castle grounds also house a museum, a hotel, numerous vacation apartments, the registry office and a historic root and herb garden. Since 2001, anyone who wants to get married can do so at the castle. A garment tailor shop offers the appropriate historical garments for this purpose on request.

Last ice age 10000 years ago brought beautiful terminal moraine

Burg Stargard is located about eight kilometers south of the district capital Neubrandenburg in the district Mecklenburg Lake District and has about 5400 inhabitants. The small town is situated in the valley of the linden tree, which is dammed up in the town in the mill pond. Among the prominent elevations in the town or in the immediate vicinity are the 90-meter-high Burgberg, the 89-meter-high Galgenberg and the 86-meter-high Kluschenberg – thanks to the most recent ice age, which ended about 10,000 years ago and pushed a beautiful terminal moraine into the present Stargrd area.

A bit of history of this historical place: When the land of Stargard was granted by Duke Wartislaw of Pomerania in 1236 to Margrave Johann I. and Otto III. Stargard's stone history began with the construction of the castle by the margraves of Brandenburg. In the course of this, next to the Wendish village of Stargard, a German market settlement at the brook "flumen Stargard" developed very quickly.

Am 11. January 1259 margrave Otto III awarded the castle. gave the town of Stargard its town charter. Like the whole country, Stargard suffered heavily from the consequences of the Thirty Years' War. Until the middle of the 18th century. At the end of the 19th century, the castle lost part of the Old Residence, the north tower, the battlements of the main castle and the defensive wall of the outer castle with four defense towers and the Maiden Gate through demolition.

Last big witch trial in the Crooked House at Stargard Castle

In the Krummen Haus the last great Mecklenburg witch trial took place in 1726. Coins are minted in the main castle from 1745 to 1747. Arson and lightning destroy the Crooked House in the main castle, three barns and two stable buildings by 1919.

With the opening of the "Nordbahn" in 1877, Stargard got a railroad connection, which contributed decisively to the development of the town. Not only the settlement of small industrial enterprises but also the tourism started. The town with its charming surroundings attracted many nature seekers and art painters, especially from nearby Berlin, and became a popular summer resort. Since 1922 the castle served as a home and farm for ten families.

In 1946 a state youth school was established here, which was converted into a youth hostel in 1963. In 1990 the youth hostel moved into the town. Now began the comprehensive architectural-historical investigation and restoration of the castle complex. After a long and difficult restoration, the castle tower was reopened as a lookout tower in 1994. The castle inn "Zur Alten Munze" and the museum opened their doors in 1999. Since the year 2000 there is a historical root and herb garden, which is well known beyond the region.

Local recreation area at the gates of Neubrandenburg

Unlike many other towns in the region, Burg Stargard did not lose its old town center at the end of World War II, "only" the town hall and five other buildings burned down. Until 1952, the castle and town gave their name to the country, the duchy and the district. With the formation of the three northern districts, Neubrandenburg took over the leading role in the region. Burg Stargard developed with a modest industry and agriculture to a local recreation area for the rapidly growing district town Neubrandenburg.

Burg Stargard has a summer toboggan run

Since 1990, the town has developed into a popular place to live and is increasingly focusing on the tourist marketing of its beautiful scenic location and, of course, the brick castle located on a hill in the city. By the way – this will please especially the children: Burg Stargard has a very nice summer toboggan run.
